O patrono do Ministério das Comunicações é o Marechal Rondon que chefiou a construção das linhas telegráficas nas regiões Centro-Oeste e Norte.
Foi criado pelo decreto-lei nº 236/1967 de 28 de fevereiro de 1967 do presidente Castello Branco.
